What is an atom? What is an element? 5. How do you calculate the mass # of an atom? 6. What makes up most of the mass of an atom 7. Which subatomic particle is responsible for the chemical properties of an atom? 10. Who discovered the electron? the proton? 13. What trends exists in a column of the periodic table? 14. What trend exists in a row if the periodic table? 15. What are the names of families 1,2,7,8? Describe their reactivity and oxidation #. Classify each family as metals or non-metals. 17. What are diatomic molecules? List them. 18. What is an ionic bond and when does it occur? Compare this to a covalent bond. 19. What is an isotope? 20. What is half-life? 21. Chapter 4 Know: Electromagnetic spectrum, know which color has the greatest & shortest wavelength. Be able to do a calculation involving c = λv ; AND E = hv (don’t forget about the units!) Know basic vocabulary: line emission spectrum, wavelength, frequency, quantum, photon, ground state/excited state, orbital, electron configuration. Know the quantum numbers (principal, angular, magnetic spin quantum numbers) / also be able to calculate/ or write if asked, i.e. if I ask what are the quantum numbers for what is (n, l, ml, ms ) 2g? n = 2, l = ……….etc… Be familiar with the principles: DeBroglie, Heinsenberg uncertainty principle, Schrodinger, quantum theory, Aufbau’s principle, Hund’s Rule, Pauli’s exclusion principle. Be able to write electron configuration short hand (aka Noble gas configuration) and long hand –know exceptions, be able to write electron configuration for IONS!!! Chapter 5 Know basic names of periodic table groups (135 - 137)/ be familiar with basic periodic table information. Be able to write the electron configuration (1s22s22p63s1 ) along with the orbital diagram (ßwith arrows) i.e.: ß remember that you need to specify an exponent that represents the number of arrows in each! Know Periodic Trends (see chapter 5 notes): Atomic Radii, Ionic Radius, Electronegativity, Electron affinity. ; make sure you know how they increase as you move across a group, a period (also in your book pg. 150-165) Know what are valence electrons. Chapter 6 Be able to identify and differentiate between Ionic and Covalent bonding (identify polar vs. nonpolar) pg. 175 -177 Be able to assign partial charges, draw individual dipole and overall dipole. Distinguish between Intermolecular Forces (Ionic bond, induced dipole, H-bonding, London Dispersion Forces) pg. 203 -208Problems based on moles please help me understand mole concept?
