The experiment we did was about Periodic Trends. We determined the trend of reactivity of nonmetals down a group, the trend of reactivity of metals along a period and the trend of acidic properties of elements along a period. The halogens used were Cl2, Br2 and I2. Metals used were Sodium, Magnesium (magnesium ribbon), Aluminum. My questions: 1.) What is ionization energy? Relate this term with reducing property of metals and its trend across a period or down a group? 2.) What is electron affinity? Relate this term with oxidizing ability of nonmetals and its trend across a period or down a group? 3.) Aluminum is placed between magnesium and sulfur in the periodic table. Will its oxide be acidic, basic or amphoteric and why? 4.) Explain the trend of acidic property of oxides of elements across the periodic table? 5.) Na (sodium) is classified as a metal while I2 (iodine) is a non-metal. However, Na has no luster while I2 has. Which criterion for metals and non-metals is more definitive and reliable? 6.) For nonmetals, their reactivity is based on their ability to oxidize the anion of a salt. Arrange the halogens tested in increasing reactivity? 7.) Reactivity of metals is based on their ability to reduce the cation of a salt or hydrogen in a compound. Arrange the metals used in increasing reactivity? 8.) Make a generalized statement on the acidic properties of the oxides of metals and nonmetals. Serious answers only, please. Need to clarify these questions.
